What arcana 5 means
Arcana 5 is tradition, teaching and transmitted knowledge. Where arcana 4 builds a structure, arcana 5 inherits one and passes it on.
The Hierophant sits between two pillars with two students in front of him. He did not invent what he is teaching and is not expected to. That sounds passive and is not: most of what anyone knows was handed to them, and arcana 5 is the arcana of that transmission working — the apprenticeship, the discipline, the thing you were taught properly and can now do.
It is also about belonging. Received ways come with the group that holds them, and arcana 5 is comfortable inside a tradition in a way arcana 1 never is.
Two things it is not. Not conservatism as a temperament — arcana 5 can be entirely radical, provided the radicalism has a lineage. And not passive reception; teaching is active work.
